Slag Wool

article

Mineral wool which is made from molten blast furnace slag.
Slag wool is a furnace product of molten rock at a temperature of about 1400 °C, through which a stream of air or steam is blown. More advanced production techniques are based on spinning molten rock on high speed spinning wheels somewhat like the process used to prepare cotton candy. The final product is a mass of fine, intertwined fibers with a typical diameter of 6 to 10 micrometers. Mineral wool may contain a binder, often food grade starch, and an oil to reduce dusting.

chemical analysis

Uniformity of its feature and its constant purity rate all over it is among the principal advantage of this product. This insulation is one of the most commonly in used product in the some of industrial countries. Sio2 brings about the threading of insulation’s fibers, and increasing the ratio of Sio2 will swing it toward Glass wool whereas the decreasing put the threading process in danger.

Its fibers’ head are spherical because of which they don’t scratch and hurts skin. Moreover, due to smallness of its particle it can be used as electricity insulation as well and is more nature-friendly.
In order to refigure them into geometric forms latex adhesive resin heat is used. The outcome has a lower heat resistance in comparison with its pure one.
The maximum temperature in which the pure slag wool can resist is 750C. Whereas, it is 350C for the impure ones.
As to its usage for sound insulating, it can be iterated that slag wool can also be used as soundproof. However, the rate of sound absorption, especially for lower frequency, is directly related to its thickness. All in all, some of its types in higher frequencies can be suitable sound insulations.

Special features of rock and slag wool

– Totally sanitary and non-poisonous
– Using in industries will bear skin and long problems
– Zero electrical conductivity and totally nonconductor
– Totally alkaline and with no corrosion effect on metals, due to absent of Cl
– high resistance to very high temperatures or in other word fireproof, due to existence of Resistant elements to high temperature such as Silicon, Aluminum, Calcium, Iron and, Magnesium in their chemical compound
– Having soft and gentle fibers
– Great sound absorption and sound penetration for high frequencies is dispensable
– Easy and economical usage
– They don’t conflict extra weight, due to their lightness
– Their usage for different situations and conditions are easy and feasible, because of their variation and flexibility
